Our Rabbits

We have raised a variety of rabbits throughout the years. Everything from Netherland Dwarfs to English Lops and all the ones in between! We are always happy to take in rabbits that otherwise cannot find homes, to live out their days on the farm or find themselves into another loving home. We always encourage that our rabbits be returned to our farm rather than end up in shelters if for any given reason they cannot stay at their current place. No judgment! No questions! No problem! :) We love ALL bunnies! lol

The majority of our rabbits are kept in an outdoor environment in what we call "Hutches" that are grouped together to create our 'Rabbitry" near our garden. This has been a very successful set up for us and love how easy and organized it is to maintain.

We do occasionally bring rabbits into our home for more one on one attention, handling/gentling and the exposure. Rabbits have been known to make great house pets and can easily be "potty trained" like a cat or dog. It does require consistent attention and paying attention to your bunny while loose in the house as there are many hazards for them.

The main reason for raising rabbits was to provide first and foremost, healthy lean meat for our family. The majority of our rabbitry consists of large meat breeds, such as the New Zealand and the Flemish Giants. We cross them for a well rounded meat-bone ratio carcass. We butcher the meat rabbits at 14-16 weeks of age. 1 rabbit can easily feed a family of 5 for dinner. You can cook rabbit just like chicken in any recipe, just add more fat such as butter.

Next to raising them for meat, we also utilize their furs and tan them to make different crafts with. I make slippers in the winter months for children as the fur is so soft and warm! All my tanning is done naturally from start to finish and am also always trying different techniques to find what works best!

In the last couple years I have taken on the role of a 4-H Rabbit Leader in our community and am thoroughly enjoying teaching children about them! It has been a very rewarding experience! We have decided to keep a couple smaller breeds of rabbits for the kids can handle easily and see the different, unique kinds that are out there!
